1 Dead, 5 Injured From Tropical Storm Melissa As It Strengthens Into Potential Category 4 Hurricane

Tropical Storm Melissa shuffled Thursday in the Caribbean Sea, unleashing a threat of life-threatening flooding and landslides for Jamaica and the southern portion of Hispaniola, which is an island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Officials are urging people in areas that are flood-prone to reach higher ground.

Melissa is being blamed for the uprooting of a huge tree that left an elderly man dead in Marigot, which is a coastal town in southern Haiti, according to the Civil Protection Agency via WESH. Five other individuals were injured in the central Artibonite area due to flooding. The storm, which is moving at a slow pace, is located around 220 miles from Kingston, Jamaica in the southeast direction, and near 280 miles from Port-au-Prince, Haiti to the southwest. Melissa currently has 45 mph maximum sustained winds and is headed north-northwest at a speed of 2 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Both a Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning are in effect for Jamaica and the southwestern peninsula of Haiti from the border with the Dominican Republic to Port-Au-Prince, per the NHC.

It’s expected that Tropical Storm Melissa will stay over hot Caribbean waters through the rest of the week, but in the coming days, it will begin to make a shift towards Jamaica and southwestern Haiti. By late Friday, Melissa is forecasted to strengthen, ultimately becoming a major hurricane by the conclusion of the weekend, and potentially forming into a Category 4 storm Tuesday, according to the NHC.
