65-year-old man dies after slipping off edge of Grand Canyon

A 65-year-old man died earlier this week after slipping off the edge of the Grand Canyon on the Hualapai Reservation in Arizona, falling over 100 feet onto a pile of rock shards.

The man fell at a western portion of the Grand Canyon located in the Hualapai Reservation sometime before 2 p.m. local time on Thursday, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office did not provide his identity or say if there were any other contributing factors to his slip and fatal fall.

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue found him 130 feet down on a scree pile, a naturally occurring pile of the fragments of fallen rocks.

The sheriff’s office, aided by Grand Canyon and Hualapai tribal police and fire personnel, used a rope system to retrieve his body.

“Our condolences are with his family. Please respect their privacy during this time,” the sheriff’s office said.
