Labour General Secretary Hollie Ridley has emailed all members confirming that there will be an election for the next deputy leader of the party. Knives out…
She details: “The National Executive Committee will meet shortly to agree the timetable and procedural guidelines for this internal contest. We will be writing to all stakeholders to set these out once agreed and ensure you have all the information you need to play your part.” Starmer didn’t abolish the position…
The NEC will have to wrangle over the timings. A lot of politics there…

“Today, Angela Rayner offered her resignation as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and from the Government. Angela has served our Party and the country with integrity and played a key role in helping Labour return to government so that we can deliver the national renewal our country needs.
We thank her for her incredible service as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, and I know everyone across the Labour movement wishes Angela and her family the very best for the future. We have no doubt that she will continue to use her immense talents and dedication to public service to continue fighting for a fairer future for working people.
This news means the Party will now need to hold a Deputy Leadership Election.
The National Executive Committee will meet shortly to agree the timetable and procedural guidelines for this internal contest. We will be writing to all stakeholders to set these out once agreed and ensure you have all the information you need to play your part.
In the first year since Labour’s election, the Government’s priority has been to sort out the mess the Tories left behind and fix the foundations of our economy. The next phase of our Plan for Change focuses on driving forward delivery for working people to make sure they feel better off.
As this Deputy Leadership Election gets underway, we will remain mindful that the Labour Party’s primary duty is to serve the country. This Deputy Leadership Election will therefore be conducted in a manner that befits the party of government and which reflects the responsibility we have to act in the national interest and get on with delivering for working people.”
