Police Officer Slashed in Face, Suspect Fatally Shot After Cops Chase Him Down

A knife-wielding man attacked an NYPD officer at a Brooklyn precinct early Sunday morning before police shot him dead following a chase through Brownsville streets.

The suspect entered the 73rd Precinct through an employee entrance around 5:28 a.m., carrying a 14-inch butcher knife. When an officer directed him to use the front door, he slashed her face in what law enforcement sources described as an attempt to cut her throat, the New York (NY) Post reported.

The officer, whose parents both served as NYPD detectives, blocked the blade with her arm but sustained cuts to her head and left ear. Despite her injuries, she joined fellow officers in pursuing the attacker.

The suspect, a man in his 40s, fled the precinct and ran approximately two blocks to a housing project on Saratoga Avenue, the outlet reported. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but he reportedly lunged at them with the knife. Police then fired, killing the attacker.

PBA President Patrick Hendry praised the wounded officer’s response to the attack. “She could have been killed here. This knife was coming right for her, but she was able to block off. She used incredible skill, and thank God she was able to do that, and she was able to save many lives out here on the street because we don’t know what he was capable of doing,” Hendry said to the NY Post.

The officer received treatment at a local hospital where her parents visited her. According to Hendry, one parent remains an active detective. (RELATED: New York City To Test Run Weapons Scanners In Subway System To Curb Crime)

“She knew that her goal was to get this individual off the streets,” Hendry said. “She knew that he was a danger to the people in this neighborhood, and she didn’t care that she was injured at that point. She wanted to stop the threat, and that’s what she did.”

NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera confirmed the incident details during a press briefing Sunday.
