I’m willing to bet LeBron got a nice fat check for this.
Recently, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James had a rare op-ed published in a media outlet run by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), putting a spotlight on basketball as a way for tensions to ease between China and the United States.
Placed in the People’s Daily newspaper Monday, James‘ op-ed read that “basketball is not only a sport, but also a bridge that connects us,” per ESPN. (RELATED: Sister Of Timberwolves’ Naz Reid Killed In New Jersey Shooting, Prosecutors Say)
The piece from James came during his time in China prior to a couple of NBA preseason games that will take place in Macao in October, both between the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns. And even bigger, it comes during a time when U.S. and Chinese officials are going over options to avoid a possible trade war between the two largest economies on the planet.
To make the situation even more interesting, James’ op-ed caught the eye of the South China Morning Post, an outlet based in Hong Kong. The outlet reported, “It is rare for the mouthpiece of China’s ruling Communist Party to run articles carrying the byline of foreign sports stars. It is more common for international sporting heroes to connect with fans in China via Chinese social media.”
