‘Shame On You!’: Stephen A. Smith Excoriates ‘People Celebrating’ Charlie Kirk Assassination

SiriusXM’s Stephen A. Smith on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” Thursday condemned those who were rejoicing over the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

Kirk was assassinated by a gunman, who is still at large, while speaking at a Utah Valley University (UVU) event on Wednesday. Smith noted on his show that Kirk was a young man who left behind two children and a wife and asserted that those rejoicing should be ashamed of themselves. “I don’t care what his political beliefs were! I don’t care what he felt! I care about the fact that a man was gunned down in front of two of his children who are 5 years of age or less,” Smith said. “That he’s dead at the age of 31. That his wife is a widow. That his children are fatherless because his ideas and his beliefs differed from somebody else, apparently.”

“And then I’m going online and I’m seeing people celebrating it!” he continued. “Shame! Shame on you!”

Then-MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd suggested on “Katy Tur Reports” on Wednesday that Kirk’s “hate speech” inevitably led to him being shot.

“[H]e’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups,” Dowd said. “And I always go back to: hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions.”

MSNBC announced it had fired Dowd on Wednesday following his remarks, calling them “inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable” and apologizing.

Dowd also apologized in a Wednesday Bluesky post.

“I apologize for my tone and words,” he wrote. “Let me be clear, I in no way intended for my comments to blame Kirk for this horrendous attack.”

A single gunshot rang out while Kirk was speaking to a large audience of students at UVU. Videos posted online showed the TPUSA founder under a tent as he debated a student regarding mass shooters and transgender ideology before the gunshot.

The FBI’s Salt Lake City field office on Thursday released surveillance photos of a person of interest in the shooting.

Authorities discovered ammunition from a rifle in a wooded area near the assassination with messaging characterized as pro-transgender and anti-fascist, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing anonymous sources.
