Utah authorities recommend aggravated murder charges in Charlie Kirk shooting

Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old college dropout charged in the shooting death of Charlie Kirk, faces aggravated murder charges in Utah.

State prosecutors are planning to charge Mr. Robinson next week with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, and obstruction of justice in a capital/first-degree felony.

Mr. Robinson was taken into custody and booked into Utah County Jail Friday after his father and a family friend, who is both a minister and a court security officer, turned him in to authorities.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Mr. Robinson “confessed” to “a family friend,” who then contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

The hunt for a suspect climaxed two days after a sniper’s bullet struck down Mr. Kirk, 31, as he gathered with students on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem.

No bail was set for Mr. Robinson’s release.

It’s not clear whether prosecutors will seek capital punishment for him.

Utah has the death penalty by lethal injection or firing squad. Only one prisoner has been executed in the past 15 years.

President Trump on Friday called for the death penalty against the suspect.

Mr. Cox called the shooting a political assassination and on Wednesday said at a press conference, “I just want to remind people we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah.”
