Ilhan Omar claims without evidence Republicans want Kamala Harris dead

Daily Caller News Foundation

Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota accused Republicans of trying to get former Vice President Kamala Harris killed during a Thursday interview.

Omar’s comments came the day after Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a TPUSA “Prove Me Wrong” event at Utah Valley University, in which he would take questions from attendees. Omar cited the end of Harris’ Secret Service protection during an appearance on Zeteo News.

“Michael Hernandez asked a good question on YouTube. He says, in this environment, why would you take away Secret Service protection from the former vice president?” Zeteo News founder Mehdi Hasan asked. “Trump happily pulled protection from Harris and I believe from people like John Bolton, who I’m not a fan of, but I don’t want to see John Bolton killed. He pulled protection from a lot of people he doesn’t like. Doesn’t sound like someone taking political violence that seriously when it’s people he doesn’t like.”

“No. I mean, and that’s the thing, it’s — they are never willing or care to worry about when, you know, it’s those of us on the other side of the aisle that are getting death threats, that have had their houses shot at, that have had, you know, people show up to their homes,” Omar claimed. “They’re willing to actually take away the security and the safety of people like VP Harris, because they don’t mind, they don’t mind her getting killed. And that is the reality in which we are living in and we have to continue to talk about. Because unless we all collectively make a decision that this is not normal and that we are going to actually be civil, you know, this is going to continue.”

During the same interview, Omar said people who remembered Kirk fondly were “full of shit” and that progressives should “call them out.”

Former vice presidents, their spouses, and children under the age of 16 can receive up to six months of Secret Service protection from the end of their time in office, according to 18 USC 2056(a)(8). Harris’ protection was not terminated until Aug. 28, 2025, well past the statutory limit, and the termination was not effective until Sept. 1.

President Donald Trump survived two attempts on his life during the 2024 presidential campaign, one during a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the other on September 15 while Trump was playing a round of golf in Florida. Trump also survived an assassination attempt during his successful 2016 campaign for President when a 20-year-old man from the United Kingdom tried to take a police officer’s gun in order to shoot Trump during a June 2016 campaign event in Las Vegas.
