ICE Officer ‘Seriously Injured’ During Enforcement Operation In Chicago

During an operation targeting an illegal migrant Friday, a federal agent was injured after allegedly being dragged by the suspect’s vehicle as he tried to escape.

The incident took place in the west suburbs of Chicago, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent told ABC7 in a statement on Friday.

The ICE agent sustained multiple injuries, but is in stable condition, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement on Friday. However, the assailant, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, was shot and killed. (RELATED: Rioters Storm Oregon ICE Building, Injure Officers)

“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement,” assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. “Viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, as well as the safety of our officers and those being apprehended.”

The family of the man killed claimed he was a father from Mexico, who was working at a restaurant in Portage Park, ABC7 added. His family also claimed he had been in the U.S. for several decades prior.

ICE officers were conducting a traffic stop to arrest Gonzalez when the incident occurred, according to the DHS statement. They claimed Gonzalez refused to cooperate with officers’ orders and proceeded to drive his car towards officers. The officer who was hit with the car subsequently drew his weapon and fired at Gonzalez, killing him.

This incident comes after ICE agents have ramped up their efforts in the Chicago area, with over 300 agents north of the city, the outlet reported.

Residents and activist groups in the area voiced their outrage after the incident.

“Today, we don’t feel safe. In a long long time, we don’t feel safe anymore. There is no reason why you are on the street, somebody stops you, and you are losing your life for it,” Marien Casillas Pabellon with the PASO West Suburban Action Project told ABC7. “Let me tell you, we are not going to live in the shadows anymore. There is no way we are going back to that. So, ICE needs to get out.”

“The Trump and deportation machine is out of control, and operating with no transparency and accountability, and leading to senseless harm to our communities, families and neighbors,” Laurence Benito of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights also said.

Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker took to X on Friday to say he was aware of the incident and that more details would come out as the case developed.

“I am aware of the troubling incident that has unfolded in Franklin Park. This is a developing situation and the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability,” Pritzker stated.

Gonzalez’s stepdaughter also shared some words with the outlet about him.

“I will miss him, and I hope he’s resting now,” she told the outlet Friday.

“He was fun guy. He respected people, and he doesn’t get into problems anymore,” she went on to say.
