Questionable Call From Referees Help Colts Get Wild Victory Over Broncos

And this is exactly why they say, “on any given Sunday.”

If you were paying attention to social media, particularly the realm that was centered around the Denver Broncos-Indianapolis Colts game, you noticed a lot of complaining from the fans of the latter about how the referees were making bad calls against them. But when the clock hit 0:00, it was Indianapolis who benefited from the zebras to lead them to victory.

During their last drive, the Colts made a few head-scratching decisions, and doing this while faced with a scenario that had them down by two points with a little over three minutes to go in the game. Indianapolis was tasked with trying to position themselves to get a game-winning field goal, and doing so chipping away the clock.

With this being the case, Colts head coach Shane Steichen relied on his running back Jonathan Taylor, who was crisp as he racked up 165 yards. With the assistance of Taylor, Indy managed to get themselves past the middle of the field, but for some reason, Steichen was fine with just trying for a field goal … a long field goal. The Colts landed a first down after completing a pass on third down, getting the ball to the Broncos’ 43-yard line. But rather than continue their push down the field, Indianapolis chose to run three consecutive times, only tallying a yard total. From there, Steichen decided to put kicker Spencer Shrader on the field to let him try a game-winning field goal that would be a whopping 60 yards if it went in.

In his NFL career, Shrader has yet to miss a kick, but with that being said, he’s never made a kick that was over 48 yards. But regardless, Steichen sent him out there to take care of business. And that he … didn’t.

It was a horrendous kick, coming nowhere close to hitting going far right. That’s when the game should’ve been over. But referees ended up giving the Broncos a 15-yard penalty for “leverage” while they were trying to block Shrader’s attempt.

Well, that gave the Colts another chance, and from a closer distance, and the victory as a result.
