Journalist Mark Halperin told SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly on Monday that he believes the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk could have serious consequences for Democrats in the upcoming elections.
Following Kirk’s murder on Wednesday, some Democrats celebrated his death while others blamed President Donald Trump’s rhetoric. Discussing Democrats’ responses to the assassination on “The Megyn Kelly Show,” Halperin said the party is back to demonizing Kirk even in his death because of his ties to Trump, since that’s “the only way they think.” (RELATED: Fake News Is Working: Plurality Of Americans Buy Lie About Alleged Charlie Kirk Shooter)
“Is it that, Mark? Is it that? A legit question. I don’t know the answer. Or is it that he’s suddenly an enormous threat?” Kelly asked.
“They don’t know what a threat he is. They know so little about him. I think this could change the entire midterms,” Halperin said. “Yeah, I think this could be galvanizing the way the Dobbs [v. Jackson] decision was. But they have no idea what he did. They don’t have any idea what his following is like.”
In a post on X, Grabien News founder Tom Elliot shared a compiled video of leftists and liberals cheering the murder of Charlie Kirk.
The TPUSA founder, who regularly spoke at college campuses to debate students on their political beliefs, made his latest stop in Utah Wednesday. About 20 minutes into speaking with students and attendees, a shot rang out through the crowd, hitting Kirk.

Halperin went on to point out that legacy media has not widely covered the surge behind TPUSA, as vigils for Kirk were held worldwide over the weekend.
“This weekend, you saw the donations. You saw the chapter requests to be formed. You saw the vigils around the country and around the world. They were barely covered. Again, you just think if this were a Democratic person of Charlie’s place in the world, close to Barack Obama, it would have led, these vigils would have led every newscast,” Halperin said. “It would have been on the front page of The New York Times.”
“[But it was] barely covered, partly because they’re hostile, but I think more because they don’t understand. They don’t know anything about him. I can’t tell you the number of well-informed Democrats who said to me, ‘Oh, I’ve learned now about who this guy was. I really didn’t know much about him except he was some sort of young guy who was for Trump,’” Halperin added. “They don’t understand that he was literally an historic figure. His memory, if Turning Point can execute, if the vice president and his team can execute, I think it could change the whole election. But they don’t know. It’s just like they’ve underestimated MAGA for 10 years.”
Since Kirk’s assassination, several people, including educators and media pundits, have been fired over their responses to the TPUSA founder’s death and for spreading false claims about his beliefs and statements.
On Monday, Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah was fired after falsely quoting Kirk, alleging he made an offensive remark about black women and claiming America allows white men to continue committing gun violence.
Last week, MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd was fired after suggesting that Kirk’s “hate speech” toward certain groups made him an inevitable target as news of the attack broke. Dowd said Kirk had been “one of the most divisive” conservative figures, claiming he was “constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups.”
Despite some of the Democrats’ responses, TPUSA has surged in growth both online and on campuses. According to Kirk’s executive producer Andrew Klovet, the organization received more than 32,000 inquiries in just 48 hours to start new chapters. For comparison, TPUSA currently has “900 official college chapters and around 1,200 high school chapters, with a presence on 3,500 total,” Kolvet wrote in a post on X.
