Costco Issues Recall, Warns Customers Kirkland Prosecco So Dangerous They Should Remove It From Their Houses

Costco on Tuesday urged members in 12 states to throw away unopened bottles of its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene because the glass can shatter without warning.

The notice covers the prosecco purchased between April 25 and Aug. 26 in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin, according to a Costco recall letter. Customers are told not to bring the bottles back to the warehouse; refunds will be issued to members who present the letter in store. “There is a risk of unopened bottles shattering, even when not handled or in use,” Costco’s letter states.

Costco warns that if customers have an unopened bottle, they shouldn’t open it. The company directs members to wrap the bottle in paper towels, seal it inside a plastic bag and put it in the trash to avoid injury from shattered glass. The letter adds that “you will be entitled to a full refund of the purchase price upon returning this letter to your nearest Costco location.”

The safety notice appears on Costco’s “Recalls & Product Notices” page and links to the full member letter. Costco did not specify how many bottles are affected.

Costco, long the No. 1 wine retailer in the United States, was surpassed by Total Wine & More in 2023, according to Forbes. Costco is the No. 2 U.S. wine retailer as of 2025.
