Twenty-two-year-old suspected shooter Tyler Robinson appeared in court Tuesday for the first time since his arrest, maintaining a stone-faced expression as the judge read the charges against him.
Prosecutors on Tuesday outlined how Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was targeted by Robinson because of Kirk’s “political expression.” During the hearing, Utah Fourth District Court Judge Tony Graf Jr. read the charges aloud as Robinson stared emotionless at the camera, only speaking when asked to state his name. “Mr. Robinson, for count one, aggravated murder, a capital felony in violation of Utah code annotated 76-5-202, in that on September 10th, 2025 in Utah County, the defendant, Tyler James Robinson, intentionally or knowingly caused the death of Charlie Kirk under the following circumstances,” Graf said.

“The defendant knowingly created a great risk of death to another individual other than Charlie Kirk and the defendant,” Graf added. “Notice conviction of this offense may carry the death penalty or pursuant to Utah code 76-3-207.7, a mandatory term of imprisonment for life without parole or an indeterminate term of not less than 25 years that may be for life.”
In addition to one count of aggravated murder, Judge Graf stated that Robinson will face one count of felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, two counts of obstruction of justice for hiding the rifle and discarding his clothing, two counts of witness tampering for instructing a roommate to delete texts, and one count of committing a violent offense in front of children.
The total charges against Robinson add up to seven, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty.
During a press conference earlier Tuesday, authorities released text messages Robinson allegedly sent to his transgender roommate, as well as messages his parents sent urging him to turn himself in.
In one message to his roommate, Robinson allegedly told the roommate to look under his keyboard for a note that said, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
“I had enough of his hatred,” Robinson allegedly texted to the roommate. “Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”
Previous information released by officials also revealed bullet casings from the rifle used to kill Kirk contained a series of phrases such as “Hey fascist! Catch!” and “If you read this you are gay LMAO.” A third bullet casing also had the engraving of “bella ciao,” which matches an Italian song name that became a left-wing anthem during World War II.
Following the reading of the charges, Judge Graf stated that the case is scheduled for Sept. 29 at 10 a.m.
