Brendan Carr Identifies Which TV Show Is A Possible Target After Kimmel Suspension

Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr hinted Thursday that ABC’s The View could be the next television show to face scrutiny.

Disney’s ABC indefinitely pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show on Wednesday after Nexstar Media Group opted to preempt the program across its ABC affiliates in response to his comments about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Appearing on “The Scott Jennings Radio Show,” Carr raised doubts about whether certain daytime and late-night programs still qualify for the FCC’s “bona fide news program” exemption under the equal opportunity rule.

“I think it’s worthwhile to have the FCC look into whether The View and some of the programs that you have still qualify as bona fide news programs and therefore exempt from the equal opportunity regime that Congress has put in place,” Carr told Jennings.

Carr said certain political talk shows are possibly abusing a regulatory loophole that exempts bona fide news programs from equal airtime requirements.

“When you look at these other TV shows, what’s interesting is the FCC does have a rule called the equal opportunity rule,” he said. “But there’s an exception to that rule called the bona fide news exception, which means if you are a bona fide news program, you don’t have to abide by the equal opportunity rule,” Carr said.

Carr said the FCC has historically treated most late-night shows, with the exception of Saturday Night Live, as bona fide news programs.

“And, potentially, I would assume you can make the argument that ‘The View’ is a bona fide news show, but I’m not so sure about that,” Carr added.

Kimmel opened his Monday night monologue by accusing the “MAGA gang” of sinking to “new lows,” and claimed Republicans attempted to paint Kirk’s alleged assassin as “anything other than one of them.” (RELATED: ‘Where’s The Joke?’: Scott Jennings Explains How Jimmy Kimmel Suspension Exposes Deeper Problems In Media)

“We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving. On Friday, the White House flew the flags at half-staff, which got some criticism. But on a human level, you can see how hard the president is taking this.”

Echoing that narrative, “The View” co-host Ana Navarro said Monday that people mourning Charlie Kirk are ignoring what she called his “inflammatory rhetoric.” She said that even Republican Gov. Spencer Cox of Utah acknowledged Kirk’s controversial language — without noting that Cox also praised Kirk’s Christian faith and message of forgiveness.
