The cost of trade union facility time has rocketed 40% in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero since Ed Miliband took over the joint, according to quietly released government figures. That’s paid time off for union reps to carry out their duties on the public purse…
In 2023-24, civil servants at DESNZ chalked up £49,977 worth of time off for union work. In 2024-25 that jumped to £69,892. Shadow Energy Minister Andrew Bowie fumed:
“Labour promised to take £300 off your energy bill, but instead they are up by £187. And now Ed Miliband’s energy department is spending 40% more to let his trade union paymasters take time off. It shows where Labour’s priorities really lie. After snatching the Winter Fuel Payment, forcing households to choose between heating and eating, Labour are keeping the union boilers running hot. Rather than cutting bills, they’re cutting cheques for union perks.”
