Labour members are moaning about the awkward timing of the deputy leadership hustings at conference. The head-to-head debate between Phillipson and Powell is scheduled for lunchtime on the last day, with tickets balloted amongst members and delegates. By which point most people will have probably already left Liverpool…
Former candidate Bell Ribeiro-Addy told LabourList:
“It is well-known many attendees leave conference on the penultimate evening or final morning. Those with pre-booked train tickets now face hefty charges to change them, or risk missing one of the few chances to scrutinise candidates in person.
Members’ participation should be at the heart of this process from here on, ensuring as many as possible can attend these hustings. I fear this is another instance where the democratic integrity of our internal processes is being damaged, and our party will suffer for it.”
So that’s Labour supporters outraged at the prospect of having to stick around for the duration of their own conference. Can you blame them?
