House Republican staffer dies after catching on fire – local officials issue conflicting statements

A staffer for Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales, a Republican, has died after reportedly catching on fire in mysterious circumstances.

Police, fire, and emergency medical services were called to staffer Regina Ann Santos-Aviles’s home in Uvalde right after 9:30 pm last Saturday, People magazine has confirmed.

Officials with the Uvalde Police Department likewise told the San Antonio Express-News that Santos-Aviles was already on fire when they arrived at her home Saturday evening.

Strangely enough, however, local fire chief Mario Range had a different story.

When we arrived, we learned of a fire behind the residence that had been put out with a fire extinguisher,” he said. “At the same time, EMS personnel were attending to a female who had suffered burns. She was transported by EMS and, at some point, flown to a San Antonio hospital.”

Santos-Aviles, 35, was pronounced dead the next morning.

Her mother, Nora Ann Gonzales, stressed that the fire was accidental, saying, “It was an accident.”

She also revealed that Santos-Aviles was still awake and conscious when she was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

“The last thing she said is, ‘I don’t want to die,’” her mother said. “And they told her, ‘We will do our best to make sure we get you taken care of.’”

She added that the family is devastated but still remains religiously faithful.

“She loved life and loved her family and loved everyone and loved doing for others,” her mother said. “She loved the work that she did and how she helped the communities get funding for things they needed.”

In a statement, local police chief Homer E. Delgado said there’s no current indication of foul play, though the death is still being investigated.

“As your Chief of Police, my heart goes out to the family and friends who are grieving,” he said in a statement. “In times of loss, our greatest duty is to stand together, support one another, and honor the memory of those we have lost.”

The Bexar County Medical Examiner has warned that the official cause of death may take up to 16 weeks to discern.

Gonzales for his part released a statement lamenting his staffer’s death.

“We are all heart-stricken by the recent news,” he said. “Regina devoted her profession toward making a difference in her community. She will always be remembered for her passion towards Uvalde and helping the community become a better place.”

According to Texas Public Radio, Santos-Aviles had served as a regional district director in Gonzales’ office since November of 2021.

“Before that, she was executive director of the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce and a board member of the Uvalde Area Development Foundation. She was also a manger (sic) of accounts and finance at the Uvalde County Fairplex from 2015 – 2020.”

The public meanwhile has little faith in Uvalde’s police accurately investigating Santos-Aviles’ death given their past performance during the 2022 Uvalde school shooting.
