Erika Kirk reveals if she will seek death penalty for husband’s accused assassin

Daily Caller News Foundation

Erika Kirk, the widow of assassinated Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk, explained her stance towards her late husband’s accused killer in a recent New York Times (NYT) interview.

Mrs. Kirk told the NYT in an interview published Sunday that in response to being asked about whether she would want to seek the death penalty against Charlie Kirk’s accused assassin she does not want the alleged assassin’s “blood” on her “ledger.” She also said that she strongly believes her husband’s assassination was “God’s plan.”

“I’m a strong believer that this was God’s plan,” Mrs. Kirk told the outlet. “And it’s so clear-cut. It couldn’t be more Charlie.”

“I’ve had so many people ask, ‘Do you feel anger toward this man? Like, do you want to seek the death penalty?’ I’ll be honest. I told our lawyer, I want the government to decide this,” she continued. “I do not want that man’s blood on my ledger. Because when I get to heaven, and Jesus is like: ‘Uh, eye for an eye? Is that how we do it?’ And that keeps me from being in heaven, from being with Charlie?”

Mrs. Kirk’s comments come after Charlie Kirk was fatally shot on Sept. 10 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University’s campus. The accused assassin, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested by police on Sept. 11. Utah prosecutors on Sept. 16 charged Robinson with aggravated murder — a capital offense that can result in the death penalty for Robinson, if he is convicted.

Mrs. Kirk also said in the NYT interview that she is now able “to see the Bible in such technicolor.”

“To be so serene in saying, ‘Thy will be done. I surrender to it.’ Do I like it? No,” Mrs. Kirk said. “That was the love of my life, my soul mate, my best friend.”

“But God’s plan is always greater than ours,” she added.

Mrs. Kirk similarly said during a speech at her husband’s memorial service on Sunday that she forgave his alleged killer. TPUSA announced Thursday that it had unanimously elected Mrs. Kirk to serve as the next CEO and chair of the board for the organization.
