Kamala Harris says her grief from losing to Trump compared to the day her mother died

Daily Caller News Foundation

Former Vice President Kamala Harris said on Tuesday that she “grieved” so deeply over her loss to President Donald Trump that it was comparable to the day her mother died.

Harris said on “The View” that she felt “pain” for the fate of the U.S. over Trump’s victory on election night in November 2024. She has repeatedly accused Trump of being a “dictator” and warned voters that the president is a threat to democracy in the lead-up to the election.

“But that night, I grieved in a way that I have not since my mother died,” Harris said. “And the pain was, it was not at all about losing a race,  I knew what it was gonna mean for the country. I was gonna say for the family, and that’s how I felt for the country. I knew what it was gonna mean, but I knew, and all I could say over and over again was ‘my God, my God, my God.’ It was very difficult.”

WATCH:

Harris entered the race less than three months before the election after former President Joe Biden dropped out at the behest of his fellow Democrats on July 21, 2024. After a 107-day campaign, she did not win a single swing state and became the first Democratic nominee in 20 years to lose the popular vote.

The former vice president also falsely claimed on Tuesday that the 2024 election was the “closest” in the 21st century. In reality, the Election of 2000 was the closest election of the century as former President George W. Bush defeated former Democratic nominee Al Gore with 271-266 electoral votes.

The election of 2020 was also closer than 2024, with former President Joe Biden attaining 74 more electoral votes. Trump won 86 more electoral votes than Harris in 2024 and received over 2 million more votes.

During a Monday appearance on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Harris called Trump a “tyrant” and compared him to “communist dictators.” Ahead of the election, Harris called Trump a “fascist” and argued that he is too “dangerous” to hold public office during an Oct. 23, 2024 town hall with CNN.
