German tourist dead, husband injured after hit-and-run incident in Manhattan

A German woman is dead and her husband is in the hospital after the pair were struck in a hit-and-run accident Wednesday in Manhattan.

The 55-year-old man and 50-year-old woman were in Manhattan at about 2:40 p.m. when the driver of a Toyota Sienna minivan struck them, New York City Police Department sources told the New York Post.

The police sources told the Post that the driver struck the German tourists while backing up out of an intersection, trapping them between the Sienna and a box truck.

The driver then fled.

“From my angle, he just sped off. You hear a loud crash and then the tires screeching and then he turned the corner and just headed off, just hauling,” witness Simeon Holman told New York City’s WABC-TV.

Police arrested Mohamed Abouzaid, 40, of the Bronx about five blocks away from the scene of the accident.

Mr. Abouzaid is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and failing to yield to pedestrians, police told New York City’s WPIX-TV.

Police identified the woman who died at the scene as Alexandra Sabine Lewalter Maric, according to New York City’s WCBS-TV. Her husband, unnamed by police, suffered a fractured skull and was hospitalized in stable condition.

The fire department told WCBS-TV that a third person also suffered minor injuries in the incident.
