Cries of immunity couldn’t save one foreign president from the consequences of “reckless and incendiary actions” regarding American soldiers as the State Department responded.
As world leaders and dignitaries descended upon New York City for the United Nations General Assembly, many had used the gathering as an opportunity to stand for a so-called Palestinian state. While most did so from within the confines of the U.N., Colombian President Gustavo Petro took to the streets with his Hamas sympathy that included calling for soldiers to disobey the orders of President Donald Trump, an urging that left him without a visa.
Late Friday, as word spread of Petro’s keffiyeh-clad demonstration with likeminded disruptors in the Big Apple, the Department of State took to X to declare, “Earlier today, Colombian president @petrogustavo stood on a NYC street and urged U.S. soldiers to disobey orders and incite violence. We will revoke Petro’s visa due to his reckless and incendiary actions.”

During the president’s remarks, as he stood shoulder to shoulder with Pink Floyd founding member Roger Waters, who himself had risked imprisonment in the United Kingdom for his outspoken support of the designated terrorist group Palestine Action, Petro called for armed action and insisted, “This force has to be bigger than that of the United States.”
“That’s why from here, from New York, I ask all the soldiers of the army of the United States not to point their guns at people. Disobey the orders of Trump. Obey the orders of humanity,” he went on.
The comments had echoed sentiments shared before those gathered at the U.N. General Assembly as Petro contended Trump was “complicit in genocide” in Gaza and that the strikes on cartel vessels justified “criminal proceedings” for the American commander-in-chief.
“The old societies of Europe are collapsing and the United States is applauding its new Hitler. It’s not listening to its own young people, or its older people who died in the battlefields of Europe, fighting against Hitler and against his criminal ideology,” asserted the visiting leader who went on to allege, “Today, the same thing is being done as Hitler did, building concentration camps for migrants, and it’s stated that migrants are of an inferior race, and they blame them just like Hitler blamed the Jews. They call them drug traffickers and thieves.”
He’d also accused Trump of not believing in science before he returned to Colombia and responded to his revoked visa with a claim that the move served organized crime.
“I arrived in Bogotá and found out that I no longer have a U.S. visa. To go to Ibagué for the great Tolima convention for democracy, I don’t need a visa. Separating the U.S. from Colombia is what the mafias need,” wrote Petro on social media. “What the U.S. government is doing to me breaks all the norms of immunity on which the functioning of the United Nations and its General Assembly is based.”
“There is total immunity for presidents attending the Assembly, and the U.S. government cannot condition the opinion of the U.S. The fact that the Palestinian Authority was not allowed entry and that my visa was revoked for asking the U.S. and Israeli armies not to support a genocide, which is a crime against all humanity, demonstrates that the U.S. government no longer complies with international law,” he went on before adding a conclusion that many who would find agreement with, “The United Nations headquarters cannot continue to be in New York.”

Meanwhile, amid a year filled with successful peace negotiations in numerous conflicts, Trump offered an update on the Middle East as he posted to Truth Social Friday evening, “I am pleased to report that we are having very inspired and productive discussions with the Middle Eastern Community concerning Gaza.”
“Intense negotiations have been going on for four days, and will continue for as long as necessary in order to get a Successfully Completed Agreement,” continued the president who noted Hamas and Israel were aware of the region-wide effort. “There is more Goodwill and Enthusiasm for getting a Deal done, after so many decades, than I have ever seen before. Everyone is excited to put this period of Death and Darkness behind them. It is an Honor to be a part of this Negotiation. We must get the Hostages back, and get a PERMANENT AND LONGLASTING PEACE!”
