Inconvenient Facts at the UN | The American Spectator

As John Adams once said, facts are stubborn things. No matter how the world dislikes them, they remain true.

A lot of uncomfortable facts and inconvenient truths were thrown around the United Nations General Assembly meeting last week by President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Those facts and truths won’t have any lasting effect because the UN is a world unto itself, one of pretense and make-believe.

Netanyahu stuck to the facts and he told the hostages and the world that Israel will not stop its action in Gaza until all the hostages are freed.

Trump had to contend with a broken escalator (and a broken teleprompter) even before his speech began. In a 56-minute speech he bashed the UN’s record of failure.

Speaking of his successes in stopping seven wars, Trump said, “It’s too bad that I had to do these things instead of the United Nations doing them. And sadly, in all cases, the United Nations did not even try to help in any of them. I ended seven wars, dealt with the leaders of each and every one of these countries, and never even received a phone call from the United Nations offering to help in finalizing the deal.”

Trump then spoke about the Hamas war on Israel. He said,

I have also been deeply engaged in seeking a ceasefire in Gaza … Unfortunately, Hamas has repeatedly rejected reasonable offers to make peace, and we can’t forget October 7th, can we? Now, as if to encourage continued conflict, some of this body is seeking to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state. The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities. This would be a reward for these horrible atrocities … those who want peace should be united with one message, release the hostages now. Just release the hostages now.

Trump then turned to the Russian war on Ukraine. He said there were between five thousand and seven thousand troops killed every week. He castigated European Union nations for buying oil and gas from Russia, saying, “But inexcusably, even NATO countries have not cut off much Russian energy and Russian energy products, which as you know, I found out about two weeks ago and I wasn’t happy. Think of it, they’re funding the war against themselves. Who the hell ever heard of that one?”

Trump also castigated the UN for funding illegal immigration. “Not only is the UN not solving the problems it should, too often, it’s actually creating new problems for us to solve. The best example is the number one political issue of our time, the crisis of uncontrolled migration. It’s uncontrolled. Your countries are being ruined. The United Nations is funding an assault on Western countries and their borders. In 2024, the UN budgeted $372 million in cash assistance to support an estimated 624,000 migrants journeying into the United States.”

Trump stayed on the issue. He said, that Europe is being destroyed by illegal immigrants pouring into it. He said the nations — which he didn’t name — are being destroyed by illegal immigration and no one is doing anything about it because they’re politically correct.  He said, “Both the immigration and their [Europe’s] suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe if something is not done immediately.”

You can take it to the bank: nothing will be done immediately or later.

Trump said that “climate change” was “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world, in my opinion.” He closed by saying, “I just want to repeat that immigration and the high cost of so-called green renewable energy is destroying a large part of the free world and a large part of our planet. Countries that cherish freedom are fading fast because of their policies on these two subjects. You need strong borders and traditional energy sources if you are going to be great again.”

Trump stuck to the facts and the General Assembly ignored his truths.

One day later, Netanyahu unleashed more uncomfortable truths. As he began his speech, dozens of people who had applauded Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s speech walked out.

Israel has no friends left, except the United States.

Netanyahu told the remaining delegates that a year ago, he stood before the same General Assembly to state that Iran’s axis of evil stood unchallenged. He said that from Lebanon, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hizballah, ordered the firing of thousands of missiles at Israeli civilians. Syrian dictator Bashar Assad was tightening a noose around Israel’s existence and the Houthis of Yemen were launching ballistic missiles at Israel and choking off shipping in the Red Sea.

Netanyahu spoke of the contrast with his speech a year ago. Iran’s nuclear program has been virtually destroyed by U.S. B-2 bombers and Israel devastated its missile forces: “So what’s happened over the past year? We’ve hammered the Houthis, including yesterday. We crushed the bulk of Hamas’s terror machine. We crippled Hezbollah, taking out most of its leaders and much of its weapons arsenal.”

He thanked President Trump for his “bold and decisive” action in launching the B-2s to destroy Iran’s nuclear weapons development sites.

Netanyahu said that as things stand today,

Half the Houthi leadership in Yemen — gone. Yahya Sinwar in Gaza — gone. Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon — gone. The Assad regime in Syria — gone. Those militias in Iraq? Well, they’re still deterred. And their leaders, if they attack Israel, will also be gone … And for Iran’s top military commanders and its top nuclear scientists…. Well, they’re gone too. Israel’s 12-day war with Iran, which I renamed Operation Rising Lion, that’s from the Bible, this 12-day war will go down in the annals of military history.

He added, “The final remnants of Hamas are holed up in Gaza City. They vow to repeat the atrocities of October 7th again and again and again, no matter how diminished their forces. That is why Israel must finish the job, and that is why we want to do so as fast as possible.”

Netanyahu named the Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. He said that he’d ordered loudspeakers into the area of Gaza City to, hopefully, address the hostages directly. Doing so, he said, “Our brave heroes — This is Prime Minister Netanyahu, speaking to you live from the United Nations. We have not forgotten you. Not even for a second. The people of Israel are with you. We will not falter, and we will not rest, until we bring all of you home.”

As Trump had done, Netanyahu stuck to the facts and he told the hostages and the world that Israel will not stop its action in Gaza until all the hostages are freed.

The facts presented by Trump and Netanyahu were terribly uncomfortable for the UN gaggle to hear. The world ignores them at its peril.
