Democratic California Rep. Eric Swalwell shared a doctored photo of the Michigan church shooting suspect on X, the photo altering his plain camouflage shirt to include a Trump 2020 logo.
The congressman posted the edited image Monday while commenting on the deadly attack at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township. The original photograph shows suspect Thomas Jacob Sanford wearing only a plain camouflage shirt with no political markings.
“I’m sure @JDVance agrees with me that it doesn’t matter that the Michigan terrorist was a MAGA supporter. Because in America, regardless of your politics, violence has never been the answer,” Swalwell wrote alongside the manipulated image on X. (RELATED: ‘Horrific Shooting’ Reported At Catholic School)

Sanford, a 40-year-old Marine veteran who served in Iraq from 2004 to 2008, allegedly rammed his pickup truck into the church entrance Sunday before opening fire during the service. Police killed him after he allegedly engaged officers in a shootout. At least four people died and eight others suffered injuries in the attack.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday that Sanford “hated people of the Mormon faith,” based on her conversations with FBI Director Kash Patel.
“From what I understand based on my conversations with the FBI director, all they know right now is that this was an individual who hated people of the Mormon faith,” Leavitt said on “Fox & Friends.”
President Donald Trump called the incident “yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America” on Truth Social. The FBI has taken over the investigation.
The shooting occurred one day after Russell M. Nelson, the 101-year-old president of the LDS church, died.
