Kash Patel at odds with Trump’s version of the 274 FBI agents at US Capitol on Jan 6, so who’s correct?

FBI Director Kash Patel’s explanation about a reported 274 “plainclothes” FBI agents among the crowd on January 6, 2021, ran afoul of the president’s statement and was deemed “1000% bullsh*t.”

Since President Donald Trump’s return to office, efforts have been underway to root out corruption and heighten transparency. However, after the commander-in-chief responded to the report of FBI agents among those gathered at the U.S. Capitol by suggesting they may have been “acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists,” Patel defended the agency with a claim that the agents were on a “crowd control mission.”

Speaking with Fox News Digital, the FBI director laid out his case for an alternative purpose and timing of events, as he said, “Agents were sent into a crowd control mission after the riot was declared by Metro Police — something that goes against FBI standards.”

The explanation did not detract from admonitions for his predecessor and the command structure responsible for the bureau that day and those who’d addressed concerns in the aftermath, as he said, “This was the failure of a corrupt leadership that lied to Congress and to the American people about what really happened.”

“Thanks to agents coming forward, we are now uncovering the truth. We are fully committed to transparency, and justice and accountability continue with this FBI,” added Patel.

The message contrasted with Trump’s, which asserted Saturday, “It was just revealed that the FBI had secretly placed, against all Rules, Regulations, Protocols, and Standards, 274 FBI Agents into the Crowd just prior to, and during, the January 6th Hoax. This is different from what Director Christopher Wray stated, over and over again!”

“That’s right, as it now turns out, FBI agents were at, and in, the January 6th Protest, probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists,” the president went on, “but certainly not as ‘Law Enforcement Officials.’”

Per the chief executive’s callout of then-FBI Director Christopher Wray, in November 2023, the top G-man stated before a House Committee, “If you are asking if the violence at the Capitol was part of some operation orchestrated by FBI sources or agents, the answer is no,” and he did not disclose if agents or sources were present within the crowd.

Little more than a year later, a report from Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz released in December 2024 indicated that there were a total of 26 FBI informants in the crowd “in connection with the events planned for January 6.”

The Blaze investigative reporter Steve Baker reacted to the director’s claim by stating, “This is 1000% bullsh*t. No one has had more time in the Capitol CCTV viewing room than me and my partner [Joe Hanneman]. We’ve never seen a single frame of video showing plainclothes FBI assisting uniformed LEOs in either ‘crowd control’ or protecting the Capitol.”

Baker went on to explain, “‘Plainclothes’ is not undercover. Plainclothes FBI agents identify themselves by either wearing clothing or a ballistic vest with a logo or hanging their badges over their chest like a lanyard. Or, at least by flashing their badges to identify themselves to uniformed law enforcement, they are allegedly trying to assist in ‘crowd control.’”

“There is no video evidence to support this claim,” he continued. “If they are 100% ‘plainclothes,’ with no identification, they are either ‘surveillance’ or ‘undercover,’ and in either of those cases, they would not be participating in crowd control. Ask any FBI agent. (We have talked to many.) They will confirm the [standard operating procedure] for their participation in ‘crowd control.’”
