New York Giants Co-Owner John Mara Reveals Battle With Cancer

A co-owner, the president and chief executive officer of the New York Giants, 70-year-old John Mara has revealed that he was recently issued a cancer diagnosis.

“I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,’’ read the statement from Mara. “I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome. I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support—personally, professionally, and medically. I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time.”

Mara was present Sunday at MetLife Stadium for the Giants game against the Los Angeles Chargers. New York was victorious, 21-18, for their first win of the campaign after starting out the season 0-3.

Mara is consistently at the Giants team facility, even having an office, to go against the standard nature of an owner in the National Football League. He’s at practices frequently and stays in contact everyday with both head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.

The Giants owner’s cancer type, as well as the stage and severity, wasn’t revealed.

Mara is the eldest son of former Giants owner Wellington Mara, whose father Tim bought the team in 1925 for $500.
