The US government shut down for the first time since 2018 last night after Congress failed to pass a stopgap funding bill. A late-night Senate vote on healthcare spending saw Democrats block the Republicans’ plan by 55 to 45 – five votes short of the sixty required to avoid a filibuster. Around 750,000 federal employees won’t be showing up to work today…
Museums, national parks, and passport services have now closed. Other critical services, including immigration enforcement, will also slow. In the meantime, President Trump is vowing massive public sector layoffs and threatening to target Democrat-supported giveaways:
“We can do things during the shutdown that are irreversible, that are bad for them and irreversible by them, by cutting vast numbers of people out, cutting things that they like, cutting programs that they like…”
There are at least some Democrats conceding they might have taken things too far. Senator Angus King admitted last night that his party’s politicking is actually “empowering” Trump, and they’ve made a mistake. Trump isn’t likely to fold any time soon…
