Jersey man arrested for camping in front of cathedral ahead of SCOTUS mass with hundreds of explosives

A New Jersey man is being slapped with hate crime charges following his shocking arrest in Washington D.C.

Authorities with the Metropolitan Police Department claim the man, identified as 41-year-old Louis D. Geri, was reportedly “camped out in a green tent in front of the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C., around 5 a.m. on Sunday,” according to Fox News. As police worked to secure the area for Red Mass, they requested the man move his tent, and the situation immediately went sideways.

“You might want to stay back and call the federales,” he allegedly told an officer. “I have explosives…”

When an officer with the department’s bomb squad approached Geri, the suspect allegedly asked, “Do you want me to throw one out? I’ll test one out in the street. I have a hundred plus of them.”

“No one will get hurt,” he allegedly continued. “There will be a hole in the street. If you just step back, I’ll take out that tree.”

Police explained to the man that he will have to be forcibly removed from the area, and that’s when the alleged threats started.

“Several of your people are gonna…die from one of these,” the affidavit quotes Geri as saying.

“Sgt. Wishnick convinced him to open the tent, where she allegedly saw him with a butane lighter ‘clenched’ in one hand along with an ‘unknown white cap-shaped object,’ the filing continues,” the Fox News report notes.

The man was reportedly in possession of a manifesto titled: “Written Negotiations for the Avoidance of Destruction of Property via Detonation of Explosives,” which he handed the bomb squad officer.

“You better have these people step away or there’s going to be deaths,” he warned her again. Authorities eventually took him into custody after he moved over to a nearby tree where he “appeared to be urinating.”

Upon searching the tent, police reportedly located “a large cache of handmade destructive devices” and some writings that allegedly “revealed his significant animosity toward the Catholic church, members of the Jewish faith, members of [the Supreme Court] and [Immigration and Customs Enforcement.]”

“Six of the current Supreme Court justices are Catholic, and two are Jewish. The court also has a 6-3 conservative majority,” Fox reported, adding that “The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle is the Mother Church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.” This tracks with the suspect’s alleged animosity toward Catholicism.

A record check indicates that Geri has a previous conviction for indecent exposure in 2021 in Arizona. He is currently being held without bond and his charges include “alleged hate crime manufacture of a weapon of mass destruction, making threats and unlawful entry,” the outlet reported.

He is expected back in court on Thursday.
