NC Democrat who voted against parents’ rights bill arrested for sexual abuse against children

A Democrat state legislator who voted against North Carolina’s “Parents’ Bill of Rights” has, not shockingly, been arrested for committing indecent liberties with a child, surprise, surprise.

State Rep. Cecil Brockman was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of statutory rape of a child between the ages of 13 and 15, according to The Assembly.

A Guilford County magistrate’s order reviewed by The Assembly also accuses Brockman of having “used his status [as a state legislator] to gain information about the whereabouts of the victim.”

The order further notes that he “has made attempts to contact the victim in this case and has gone as far as attempting to locate the juvenile in the hospital.”

Brockman has been denied bail based on several factors, including all the evidence against him and his status as a state lawmaker, ironically enough.

Stunningly, Brockman filed an affidavit of indigency on Thursday. This allowed him to procure the services of a taxpayer-funded public defender on the grounds that he couldn’t afford a lawyer.

Both state Democrats and Republicans are now pushing for him to resign from his post in disgrace.

“While the legal process has yet to play out, it’s clear he cannot effectively serve his constituents and should resign immediately,” Gov. Josh Stein, a Democrat, said in a statement.

“As we continue to learn more about the allegations against Rep. Brockman this morning, it has become clear that he is unable to continue serving in the House of Representatives,” state House Minority Leader Robert Reives, also a Democrat, added.

State Rep. Bryan Cohn, another Democrat, also chimed in:

“The North Carolina Democratic Party calls on Representative Brockman to immediately resign,” the state’s official Democratic Party said in a statement to Fox News. “The profound seriousness of these criminal charges makes it impossible for him to effectively represent his community.”

Across the aisle, House Speaker Destin Hall, a Republican, has also joined the chorus.

“The charges against Rep. Brockman are shocking and extremely serious,” he wrote in a tweet Thursday. “Given the evidence that’s publicly known, he should resign immediately so these charges do not distract from the work of the North Carolina House.”

Brockman, who’s openly gay, famously opposed N.C.’s “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” which would have upheld a wide number of parental rights concerning children. For instance, the bill would have required educators to obtain permission from parents before bringing up controversial subjects such as gender and sex with older students.

The bill would have also required that schools keep parents abreast of changes in their children’s physical and mental health — such as, for example, if a child suddenly started identifying as a different gender.

Brockman was reportedly already on the ropes even before his arrest on Wednesday.

“[H]e has been criticized for frequent absences from legislative sessions, sometimes during key votes when fellow Democrats needed him to sustain a veto against the Republican majority,” according to The Assembly.

He’s also faced primary challenges, the most recent one being from High Point NAACP President James Adams.

“Brockman narrowly survived that primary challenge, and did so with help from the Carolina Leadership Coalition, a conservative nonprofit with deep ties to both North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) and a political action committee that supports House Republicans,” The Assembly notes.
