Despite being snubbed as the committee seemingly put “politics over peace,” this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner found a heartfelt way to honor President Donald Trump.
As the chief executive earned the moniker “President of Peace” and established a strong case for being the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, the committee announced Friday that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado had earned the 2025 honor. In response, she dedicated the award to both the “suffering people” of her country and to the American president.
The public recognition of Trump, whose White House describes Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro’s government as a “corrupt regime,” came in a social media post that began, “This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom. We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy.”
Machado went on, “I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!”

Having had a phone conversation with the Venezuelan opposition leader, Trump explained from the Oval Office on Friday that she’d told him, “I’m accepting this in honor of you, because you really deserved it. A very nice thing to do.”
“I didn’t say, ‘Then, give it to me,’ though,” the chief executive went on, drawing laughter from those gathered. “I think she might’ve. She was very nice … You know, I’ve been helping her along the way. They need a lot of help in Venezuela. It’s a basic disaster.”
Amid the numerous peace deals that have taken place in 2025, which could result in his own honor next year, including the recently brokered agreement between Israel and Hamas, Trump went on to express, “I’m happy because I saved millions of lives, many millions of lives.”

In explaining the decision to award Machado, Norwegian Nobel Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes had referred to her as a “key, unifying figure in a political opposition that was once deeply divided–an opposition that found common ground in the demand for free elections and representative government.”
Machado’s decision not to leave her country, even as the human rights organization Foro Penal has reported over 800 political prisoners are incarcerated by Maduro, including her own son-in-law, Rafael Tudares, was said to be a contributing in her award as Fryndes stated, “When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognize courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist.”
“Democracy depends on people who refuse to stay silent, who dare to step forward despite grave risk, and who remind us that freedom must never be taken for granted, but must always be defended — with words, with courage and with determination,” added the committee chair.
The United States is among a number of nations that do not recognize Maduro’s claim to victory in the 2024 presidential election, as Edmundo González, the candidate who’d replaced Machado on the ballot after the regime had disqualified her from the race, was said to have won the majority of votes.
González shared his own post congratulating the “beloved” Machado and the “Well-deserved recognition for the long struggle of a woman and of an entire people for our freedom and democracy.”

Meanwhile, White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung had called out the suspected bias of the committee that previously awarded then-President Barack Obama during his first year in office for “efforts” at diplomacy and a “vision” of a world without nuclear weapons.
“President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will,” wrote Cheung. “The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”
