Four Dead After Shooting At South Carolina Bar

Four people died, and at least 20 others suffered injuries when gunfire erupted at a crowded South Carolina bar early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) responded to Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island around 1 a.m. after receiving multiple reports of a shooting. Deputies arrived to find a chaotic scene with hundreds of people present when the violence began, according to BCSO’s post.

“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gun shots,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Four victims died at the scene. Emergency responders transported four others to area hospitals in critical condition. Additional victims arrived at hospitals on their own seeking treatment for gunshot wounds. (RELATED: Two Dead In Alabama After Mass Shooting Following Football Game)

The sheriff’s office is investigating persons of interest but has not announced any arrests. The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will release the victims’ names after notifying families.

WSAV News spoke with the owner and a cook at Willie’s Bar and Grill who were inside during the shooting. Both witnesses said they remain unsure what triggered the violence.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, fire departments and Beaufort County EMS responded to assist with the investigation and treat the wounded.

“This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone,” the sheriff’s office said. “We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.”
