Kai Allen had quite the near miss experience in the very first Bathurst 1000 of his career, narrowly missing a kangaroo that jumped in front of his car as he was speeding down Conrod Straight.
Missed during the broadcast of the race, video shows Allen barely missing the iconic Oceanian animal near the end of the race at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. At the time of the incident, Allen was going 160 mph (250km/h).
At that speed, a collision with the kangaroo would have seen the conclusion of the race for the 20-year-old. (RELATED: Two Hikers Placed In Hospital After Getting Attacked By Grizzly Bear In Canada)
“Gee, what a race,” said a stunned Allen after the race, per Australian media outlet Nine Network. “I had a bit of a target on my back today, the car is absolutely destroyed, but we just didn’t give up, kept fighting. The only thing that I didn’t hit was a little kangaroo that blew straight past the front of my car at 250 down Conrod, and I just missed it.
“I owe him a beer, otherwise it would’ve been race over.”
