Major roads in Finland saw their traffic halted Saturday morning following a major pile-up in Lahti that featured around 50 vehicles and caused multiple injuries. A total of two pile-ups took place, with another crash on a smaller scale marking a third incident.
The pile-ups happened in each direction of the busiest highway in Nelostie, which is to the north of Renkomäki. The smaller crash, which involved a chemical tanker, occurred on the southern ring road. Warnings were issued by the Finnish Meteorological Institute, per the Helsinki Times, regarding black ice throughout almost the whole nation overnight.

During the accidents, three police vehicles were hit, with two suffering major damage, per the outlet. None of the officers were injured.

According to local police via the Helsinki Times, visibility was extremely reduced due to what they describe as “Konginkangas weather,” which is referencing the bus-truck crash in 2004 that resulted in 23 deaths from conditions that were similar.
Temperatures rose quickly from under zero degrees, developing black ice, per the outlet. Visibility was around zero in parts of the region where dense fog declined instantly.
