Hamas defends executing Gaza citizens, calls it ‘a transitional phase’

Hamas continues to violate its peace treaty with Israel and the U.S., despite President Donald Trump’s increasing threats.

Its most recent violations involve the butchering of Gazan citizens in public executions.

Hamas politburo member Mohammed Nazzal told Reuters in an interview late last week that the ongoing public executions of some Gaza citizens amount to “exceptional measures” for dealing with those whom he alleged were “criminals.”

In labeling the executed as criminals, he appeared to deny accusations that he and his allies have been rounding up and executing their political opponents, particularly those allied with Israel.

Nazzal’s words contradicted a CNN report that described the violent clashes as being “between Hamas and rival groups.”

CNN cited “one particularly gruesome video … showing a group of masked fighters, some of whom are wearing green Hamas headbands, killing eight blindfolded people in a square in Gaza City while large crowds are watching.”

CNN described the execution as “a possible sign of the brutality Hamas is using to reassert itself as the security force” in Gaza.

Gaza lawyer and former Hamas political prisoner Moumen al-Natour has also contradicted Hamas.

“After the fire stopped, Hamas fighters came out of the tunnels and massacred families that opposed them,” he told Fox News last week. “They are sending a signal that they are back – by terrorizing people.”

Fox News also confirmed that several militias have been resisting Hamas’ control.

“In Rafah, the Abu Shabab clan has drawn attention for recruiting fighters and resisting Hamas’s control,” the network noted. “In Gaza City, the Doghmush clan has clashed repeatedly with Hamas terrorists. In Khan Younis, the Mujaida clan has also been involved in armed confrontations.”

Hamas also appears to be unwilling to disarm, which is another major requirement of the peace deal.

Asked by Reuters about whether the terrorist group is willing to disarm, Nazzal was unwilling to give a definitive “yes.”

“I can’t answer with a yes or no,” he said. “Frankly, it depends on the nature of the project. The disarmament project you’re talking about, what does it mean? To whom will the weapons be handed over?”

Despite this, he alleged that Hamas is genuinely interested in rebuilding Gaza, versus just using the peace deal and ceasefire to restock its weapons and recruit more fighters.

“The goal isn’t to prepare for a future war,” he said.

Trump doesn’t seem to be convinced. During a press conference on Monday, the president stressed that Hamas will be “eradicated” if they keep playing around.

“We have peace in the Middle East for the first time ever,” he said. “We made a deal with Hamas that … they’re gonna behave, they’re going to be nice, and if they’re not – we’re going to eradicate them if we have to. They’ll be eradicated, and they know that.”

“We’ve had countries calling me when they saw some of the killing with Hamas, saying we’d love to go in and take care of the situation ourselves,” Trump added, according to Fox News.

“In addition, you have Israel — they would go in, in two minutes. If I asked him to go in, I could tell him, ‘Go in and take care of it.’ But right now, we haven’t said that. We’re going to give it a little chance, and hopefully there will be a little less violence,” he continued.

This threat followed a post he made to Truth Social last Thursday.

“If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them,” he wrote in the post.
