Outside Los Angeles in Compton, Sunday afternoon shopping at Pink Beauty Supply turned violent and deadly when a man with gang ties and a criminal record followed a woman into the store. Following requests that he leave after groping the victim, the increasingly violent suspect was given a warning shot before a third party took aim at the man in fear for her own life.
According to a release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, “Investigators learned the male entered the store following a female customer. The male groped the female customer. Employees requested the male leave the store. The male became increasingly verbally assaultive toward employees and customers. He started throwing and damaging merchandise in the store.”
“The incident rapidly escalated. Employees and customers noted that the male had an object in his hand that they believed was a knife. The male made verbal threats that he was going to kill and harm everyone in the store,” the statement detailed. “A second customer in the store, fearing for the store employees, herself, and other customers, retrieved a personal firearm and fired a warning shot at the male.”
It was then that the man turned toward her, and she fired a second shot that fatally struck the man she believed was going to attack her. The man was pronounced dead at the scene after the Compton Fire Department arrived.
“It’s crazy to me because children go in there a lot, so what if I was there by myself and that just automatically went off?” posited one witness. “I could’ve gotten hit or something could’ve happened to me.”
While other shoppers voiced their dissatisfaction with the woman who interceded on behalf of the store in the once-Golden State where Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has repeatedly signed legislation aimed at curbing the Second Amendment rights of citizens, the witness added, “I’m glad that the woman that did it was brave enough to even go and do something like that to save somebody else.”
As for the decedent, LASD Lt. Steve DeJong said, “He alleged he was a gang member and LASD says it appears he was a gang member, unknown if still active.”
Likewise, the criminal record of the man seen on surveillance footage drinking alcohol and loitering in the area included assaults, disturbing the peace, robberies, and thefts.
A review of crime statistics comparing the period of Jan. 1, 2024, to Aug. 31, 2024, with the same timeframe in 2025, detailed one more homicide at 16, as aggravated assault had increased by more than 10% in Compton. Additionally, analysis that tracked homicides by population put the city at ninth in the nation for 2024 homicide rates, 20.1%, with St. Louis, Missouri, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Detroit, Michigan holding the top spots at 54.4%, 34.7% and 32.1% respectively.
