New CBS News chief Bari Weiss sets her sights on top Fox anchor: Report

CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss reportedly has an interest in Fox News anchor Bret Baier joining the network to host its evening news broadcast.

The “eyebrow-raising” report from Oliver Darcy, founder of the nightly newsletter Status, said Weiss “is making moves that reveal how she intends to reshape the network.” According to Darcy, Weiss is “quietly canvassing the industry for a fresh face to helm the CBS Evening News,” which “would put her stamp on the network’s flagship broadcast.”

“In addition to eyeing internal candidates for the job, such as Norah O’Donnell and Tony Dokoupil, Weiss has also expressed interest in a handful of external candidates, including a name sure to raise eyebrows across the media world: Fox News anchor Bret Baier,” Darcy reported.

O’Donnell hosted the program from July 2019 to January 2025, averaging 4.8 million viewers, according to Nielson, compared to 4.1 million for her replacements, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois.

Some of Baier’s critics on the right may suggest CBS News would be a better fit, but don’t expect Fox News to roll over and play dead — Baier, who joined Fox News in 1998 and currently earns roughly $14 million a year, reportedly signed a multi-year contract extension in September 2023, which runs through 2028.

Social media users are skeptical of the rumored interest for several reasons, including the Fox News stamp Baier would bring with him to the more left-leaning network.

Here’s a sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
