Trump raises tariffs on Canada over for not cutting anti-tariffs ad faster

President Trump said he is increasing tariffs on Canada by 10% because of an ad that was broadcast in Canada that featured audio from a 1987 speech from former President Ronald Reagan, where he opposed tariffs.

The ad angered Mr. Trump, and since then, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would air the commercials during the first two games of the World Series before pulling the ads on Monday to discuss trade.

“Canada was caught, red handed, putting up a fraudulent advertisement on Ronald Reagan’s Speech on Tariffs,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social.

“Becuase of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now,” Mr. Trump said.

“Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD,” Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Trump objected to the ads as a form of foreign interference in a high-stakes Supreme Court battle over his use of a 1977 law to impose sweeping nation-by-nation tariffs, which are duties on imported goods.

The U.S. president imposed a blanket 35% tariff on many Canadian goods and high tariffs on imported steel, aluminum, cars and car parts – a move that impacts the Canadian economy.
