‘What The F**k Did You Just Do?’: Obama Was Allegedly Irate With Pelosi During 2024 Presidential Campaign

Former President Barack Obama was reportedly furious with former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi after she didn’t hesitate to endorse former Vice President Kamala Harris after former President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, a new book alleged.

Obama wanted to go through “a process” of picking a Democratic nominee, according to an excerpt from ABC News’ Jonathan Karl’s new book, “Retribution,” reviewed by the Daily Mail. Obama called Pelosi following the public endorsement, according to the excerpt obtained by the outlet. “The Obamas were not happy,” a Pelosi confidant told Karl. “This person summed up Obama’s message to Pelosi as, essentially, ‘What the f*** did you just do?’”

“That train has left the station,” Pelosi responded, the Daily Mail reported.

Obama was reportedly surprised by Pelosi’s move as the two had been in “regular communication” regarding the potential of Biden dropping out of the race and both “agreed Harris should not simply be handed the nomination unchallenged.”

“Therefore, Obama and Pelosi — arguably the two most influential figures in the Democratic Party — had privately agreed to abstain from making any endorsements,” the book alleged.

Biden’s campaign dropped out shortly after a presidential debate against President Donald Trump, in which the incumbent Biden stumbled through answers. The debate took place following reports of his mental decline.

Biden announced he was exiting the race July 21 and swiftly endorsed Harris. Pelosi endorsed Harris the next day.

“The former president wanted to know what had happened. Why had Pelosi issued a statement endorsing Harris so soon? Hadn’t he and Pelosi agreed days earlier that party leaders anointing the vice president as Biden’s replacement would be a mistake?” Karl wrote, according to the Daily Mail.

A source close to Obama told the author he wasn’t angry at Pelosi regarding the move but referred to the exchange as “good-natured ribbing.”

However, a source close to Pelosi claimed Obama sounded “genuinely irritated” during the call.

The senior Biden adviser told Karl that Obama didn’t want Pelosi to endorse Harris because he didn’t think she could win, saying, “There’s only one Black Jesus.”

Even Pelosi’s husband, Paul, was also surprised to have heard about the decision, according to a source close to the congresswoman. “Kamala?” Paul asked, the book alleged.

Pelosi had “no choice,” Karl wrote, as many other Democratic figures were already backing Harris. “No other candidates had stepped forward — Kamala Harris was it. The only thing Pelosi could do was try to help her win the election.”

Obama would need another four days to endorse Harris for the presidency. “Retribution” is set to be released Tuesday.
