A new poll released one week ahead of New York City’s mayoral election Nov. 4 shows that no one cares much about the Democrats who have endorsed darling socialist Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani has received a slew of endorsements from major Democratic and left-wing leaders that include Sens. Liz Warren and Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also endorsed him in an oblique tone that we have all come to know and expect from Kamala. Rather than outright endorsing him and planting her flag firmly, she told MSNBC that since he is the Democrat in the race, she supports the Democrat. Most recently, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who held out for as long as possible, finally lined up behind Mamdani. (The other major New York Democrat, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, is still quiet.)

“As with any Mayor, there will be areas of agreement and areas of principled disagreement. Yet, the stakes are existential,” Jeffries said in his rather passive-aggressive statement.
Yet, despite a growing list of support, a new Suffolk poll released Monday suggests that the endorsements haven’t played much of a role in swaying voters.
The new poll found that among likely voters, Mamdani garnered nearly 44% of support, and now has a 10-point lead over Andrew Cuomo, who earned nearly 34% of support. Republican Curtis Sliwa trailed behind with 10.8%, while 7.2% of those polled remained undecided, according to the poll.
In mid-September, a separate Suffolk University poll had put Mamdani in a more dominant position with 45% support, overshadowing Cuomo’s 25.2%, Sliwa’s 8.6%, while 9.4% of respondents remained undecided.
Cuomo also made notable progress with Hispanic and Independent voters. In September, Cuomo trailed Mamdani by 30 points among Hispanic voters. According to the new poll, he’s leading by one point in October. Similarly, he moved from trailing Mamdani by 18 points among Independents to a 10-point lead. (Subscribe to MR. A caveat, though: it’s only one poll, and certainly does not mean that Mamdani’s support has collapsed, or that he is no longer the favorite in the race.
But it does indicate that New Yorkers simply don’t care about these sorts of endorsements, which seem to excite the Washington media class more than the people actually voting in the election. After all, this is still a local race. It’s still about New York City, its residents, and which path the city will take for the next several years.
Or, that some of the endorsements are perhaps making things worse for Mamdani.
Mamdani held a buzzy rally Sunday with Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez. Although such an event may titillate his most passionate, loyal supporters, it may do the exact opposite with Independents. Glowing endorsements from D.C.’s most left-wing politicians might solidify one’s socialist bona fides. It also might inspire a chill of fear in a working-class Hispanic, neither a Republican nor a Democrat, who is concerned about his family’s safety as they walk to school.
