Typhoon Kalmaegi underwent intensification Tuesday as it slammed into the central Philippines, triggering warnings regarding conditions being “life-threatening.”
Huge portions of the Visayas region were issued the second-highest storm warning as Kalmaegi reached maximum sustained winds of 105 mph to make it a Category 2, per Zoom Earth. Kalmaegi also unleashed gusts up to 127 mph, according to Devdiscourse.
Locally named Tino, the typhoon is expected to pass over the Visayas and move into the South China Sea by Wednesday. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the typhoon could slightly weaken because of its interaction with terrain. However, the storm is forecasted to stay a typhoon as it moves through the nation. (RELATED: Forecasts Show Atmospheric River Storms Slamming Pacific Northwest With Heavy Rain, Flooding)
