The Mauritius government was planning to organise a ‘flag-raising’ expedition to Chagos this week which would begin the resettlement process. That has been mysteriously and suddenly delayed…
According to reports in Port Louis outlet Defi:
“Paul Bérenger (Mauritius Deputy Prjme Minister) also spoke about ongoing negotiations with India. An airplane and a boat will be made available to the delegation that will travel to the Chagos, he specified. It will be composed of government members as well as representatives of the Chagossian community. This highly awaited trip will not be limited to the ceremony of raising the national flag: it will also mark an important step toward the resettlement of the Chagossians on their island of origin”.
Port Louis says this has now been pushed back until 2026. The deal’s opponents say the slowdown reveals that Mauritius never had any intention of resettling the Chagossians – despite Starmer falling for the argument hook, line and sinker. The statements of the Mauritius government suggest India is calling the shots. Starmer hasn’t even achieved his own objectives with his Chagos surrender…
