Labour is refusing to say whether any prison staff have faced disciplinary action for accidentally freeing criminals. Robert Jenrick asked:
“Whether any disciplinary action has been taken against (a) prison staff or (b) senior officials due to the erroneous release of prisoners since 1 April 2025.”
Justice minister Jake Richards trotted out the usual excuses – blaming the previous government for the state of the prisons – before saying:
“The Ministry of Justice cannot provide the information requested. National conduct and discipline data for prison staff is published as part of the HMPPS Staff Equalities Report Official Statistics release available on gov.uk. The latest available data covers the period up to March 2024.”
There’s no detailed breakdown of disciplinary action in last year’s report either. Meanwhile, there’s been a 128% increase in the number of prisoners accidentally released in the 12 months to March – yet Labour refuses to reveal how many have been let loos since then. You’d have thought after the Epping migrant sex attacker saga, they’d be ramping up action…
