Death Toll Rises To 81 In Hurricane Melissa Aftermath, 42 Remain Missing

The government of Jamaica has started reaching the areas hit the hardest by Hurricane Melissa one week following the record-breaking storm making landfall and devastating the western portion of the Caribbean country.

The parishes of St. Elizabeth, St. James and Westmoreland all saw key infrastructure and several buildings blasted by Melissa’s eyewall, as well as the storm’s most powerful winds which reached a maximum sustained speed of 185 mph at landfall, per the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Hurricane Melissa also impacted Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Panama in the Caribbean, while the United States also felt limited effects, according to the latest death toll from popular tracking page Weather Fatalities. As of Tuesday, a total of 81 people have died as a result of Melissa, with 42 still missing.

Out of all the nations, Jamaica has the most deaths with 35, while Haiti isn’t far behind at 34. In the Dominican Republic, four people died from the storm, while Panama has the same number. Both Cuba and the United States have two deaths each.
