NYC’s Jewish fire commissioner quitting after Mamdani election

New York City’s Jewish fire commissioner, Robert Tucker, is resigning upon Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral election, reported the New York Post.

Mr. Tucker will instead run the same private security firm he did before joining Mayor Eric Adams’ administration.

The Washington Times reached out to Mr. Tucker’s office for an explanation.

The former secretary of the FDNY Foundation celebrated his first anniversary as fire commissioner in August, and he will leave the post on Dec. 19, according to the Post.

Mr. Tucker was sworn in as commissioner on his personal Hebrew Bible from his bar mitzvah.

New York City has the largest Jewish population in the U.S., and Mr. Mamdani holds critical views of Israel, making many Jewish New Yorkers uneasy.

“We will build a City Hall that stands steadfast alongside Jewish New Yorkers and does not waver in the fight against the scourge of antisemitism,” Mr. Mamdani said in his victory speech Tuesday, seemingly addressing concerns.

News of Mr. Tucker’s resignation came just as he was set to fly to Israel Wednesday to meet with a fire commissioner there.
