As a huge fan of “Moneyball,” I’m absolutely loving this.
The Colorado Rockies have hired Paul DePodesta as their head of baseball operations, sources briefed on the matter told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Zac Jackson and Brittany Ghiroli

For the past decade, DePodesta was employed with the Cleveland Browns in the NFL as their chief strategy officer. During his time with the Browns, DePodesta worked under numerous general managers, with the last five seasons being under general manager and executive vice president Andrew Berry. Not actually being the GM himself, DePodesta was seemingly high-ranked when it came to player acquisition and scouting, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
In the past eight campaigns, Cleveland made the postseason in two of them, with their most recent full season being a 3-14 performance in 2024 that saw them finish last place in the AFC North division. In 2025, they’re sitting at 2-6, again in last place as they go through another rebuild. (RELATED: ‘He’s A Bum’: Warriors’ Draymond Green Blasts Cowboys’ Dak Prescott Over Dallas’ Lackluster Season)
Most notably, DePodesta worked in Major League Baseball with the then-Oakland Athletics under general manager Billy Beane, which was ultimately portrayed in the 2011 hit movie “Moneyball” starring Brad Pitt, viewed as a classic to baseball fans.
Jonah Hill played the role in the film, though the character was named Peter Brand. After the film’s script was rewritten, DePodesta felt it no longer properly reflected real life and asked for his name to be taken out, according to Screen Rant.
Truly one of the greatest sports movies ever made … yeah, I agree with pretty much everybody else that Paul DePodesta hasn’t really done much outside of the “Moneyball” era, but it’s still pretty cool to witness.
We’ll see what happens.
