At least 188 people are dead in the Philippines after Typhoon Kalmaegi, locally known as Tino, slammed the nation to impact around 2,411,000 residents, rolling through Mindanao and the Visayas, according to a statement Friday from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
The majority of the deaths were out of Cebu and the region of Negros Island, per the NDRRMC’s most recent situational report via The Manila Times.

Across six regions in Mindanao and the Visayas, 680,431 families were impacted by the storm, which comes to a total of 2,411,090 individuals affected. 2,936 evacuation centers saw 302,008 people, or 83,139 families, sheltered, per the NDRRMC.
Typhoon Kalmaegi first made landfall Nov. 4 over Tacloban City, Leyte, as a Category 2 equivalent typhoon with maximum sustained winds of 96 mph and gusts reaching up to 118 mph, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The storm went on to unleash strong winds and heavy rainfall Friday in Vietnam, doing so just days following the typhoon hammering the Philippines.
According to local media in Vietnam per the Associated Press, two deaths were reported in the Dak Lak and Gia Lai provinces.
Facing another powerful typhoon in the coming days, which is named Fung-wong (Uwan), President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of national emergency Thursday in the Philippines. That storm is expected to make landfall Sunday night or Monday morning into the western coast of the Philippines, per PAGASA.
