Biden says Trump has ‘taken a wrecking ball’ to democrary

Former President Joe Biden told Democrats in Nebraska that the party “is back” after some Democratic candidates won across the country in elections earlier this week.

Mr. Biden spoke at the Nebraska Democratic Party’s “Ben Nelson Gala” on Friday. He praised the party while railing against President Trump.

“The Democratic Party is back. That’s not hyperbole,” Biden said. “Did you see the election results?”

Two Democratic candidates won gubernatorial races on Tuesday – Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey. Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, won the mayoral race in New York City.

“Look, the American people are sending a message. A message to Trump and his crowd,” Mr. Biden said. “You work for us, Mr. President. We don’t work for you. You work for us, not just billionaires and millionaires.”

“I mean this sincerely,” he said. “I’m angry. You work for us.”

He said there “are no kings in democracies,” and said Mr. Trump acts “in a way that embarrasses the nation.”

Mr. Biden ran against Mr. Trump in the 2024 election cycle before dropping out. Former Vice President Kamala Harris replaced him on the Democratic ticket, but ultimately lost the election.

He accused Mr. Trump of “making hunger worse for Americans,” as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funding has paused as the government remains shut down, and railed against the construction of the White House’s new ballroom and the “Great Gatsby” themed Halloween party he attended at Mar-a-Lago.

“When I left the presidency, I knew President Trump was going to take a wrecking ball to the country, but I have to admit I didn’t know it was going to be an actual wrecking ball,” Mr. Biden said. “Anyone see what he’s done to the East Wing of the people’s house?”

“It’s the perfect symbol of his presidency,” he said. “Trump has taken a wrecking ball not only to the people’s house, but to the Constitution, to the rule of law, to our very democracy.”

The former president also discussed his prostate cancer diagnosis.

“I thank God for the doctors and the nurses and the incredible breakthroughs we’re making in cancer research,” Mr. Biden said. “Now Trump and his Republican friends are cutting government funding for health care and making it more expensive, more expensive for virtually everyone.”

Mr. Biden rang the bell after completing a cycle of radiation therapy late last month.
