This is not your average children’s book – and not just because of the subject. First, there is strong historical context, coming 23rd in a superb series. Carr excels in giving readers a sense of time and place. Children will be fascinated by the five pages of ‘did you know’ facts.
Second, there is discussion of contemporary theological challenges. Through narrative appropriate for 7–12 year olds, Carr records Macrina contrasting the Bible’s view of body and soul with that of ancient philosophy. The challenge of Arius is likewise ably described.
