Starmer was ‘personally involved’ in the improper appointment of Labour donor David Kogan as chairman of the football regulator. Lisa Nandy is having to deal with the implosion at the BBC after spending the weekend apoligising for her role in the appointment of a donor to her own leadership campaign…
Nandy was ticked off by Starmer, which is ironic seeing as sources said at the time said it was actually Starmer who was the driving force behind the appointment. Everyone has forgotten what the Guardian wrote in May, when Labour was congratulating itself:
“Keir Starmer is said to have been involved in the decision-making over the past couple of weeks, with Kogan very much the prime minister’s man… Multiple sources with knowledge of the recruitment process claim his impeccable Labour connections were equally significant. The 67-year-old has written two books on the Labour party, only recently stood down as chair of the independent news website LabourList, and has made nine donations to the party and MPs totalling £33,000 since 2022, including £5,000 to the chancellor, Rachel Reeves.”
Ironically the paper reported that Nandy was overridden in her concerns about propriety:
“Nandy was initially reluctant to recommend him because of concerns over the perception that it was a political appointment. ‘David has been there in the background all along, but as a Labour donor we didn’t want to go down that route,’ a source said.”
Kogan was present at a LabourList rally with Nandy at Labour Conference last year. The man himself is said to have shared the view that he is a Labour person:
“‘David likes to think of himself as under-the-radar Labour aristocracy, but will be very much in the spotlight now,’ said someone who has worked closely with him.”
The Tories are asking the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Daniel Greenberg to open a new investigation into the donations made by Kogan to Lisa Nandy’s leadership campaign as well as Keir Starmer’s one. The figure donated to the PM is not currently known. Who knows what Greenberg might find…
