David Lammy has officially lost track of how many prisoners have been released in error. The Justice Secretary said in his statement in the Commons that 91 prisoners were accidentally released from prison between April 1 and October 31 this year. Jenrick had told him to consider resignation if he could not name the statistics. But wait, there’s more…
Lammy told the Commons there is another prisoner potentially on the loose:
“I have been informed, Mr. Speaker, this afternoon that HMPPS are investigating a further case of a potential release in error on 3 November who may still be at large.”
That means we don’t know if 91 or 92 prisoners have been released in the period. He additionally said sorry:
“I give an unequivocal apology to all who have faced worry or worse as a result of releases in error, especially Hadush Kebatu’s victims whom I offered to meet.“
Lammy said he is founding a ‘Justice Performance Board’ to “drive a step change in how we respond” to errors and inadequacies as well as hiring data experts to solve digital issues. Did the “strongest checks ever” not do it?
