Another Labour minister has already jetted off to China despite the furore over the last weeks around the Chinese spying scandal. Science minister Lord Vallance led a group from the university sector to discuss “scientific cooperation” with Chinese officials. Just last week it was revealed Chinese officials carried out an intimidation campaign against Sheffield Hallam University to prevent research into alleged human rights violations…
Despite Labour’s spin that the UK has “scaled back” scientific cooperation over, after Vallance met with his Chinese counterpart Chen Jiachang, he signed off on a new bilateral agreement for “positive collaboration” on climate change, science and technology. Vallance said “we have to be open to all opportunities to improve people’s lives and grow our economy”. The US had not been consulted in the agreement. Trade Secretary Peter Kyle had already jaunted off to China to reopen trade talks just last month. The Golden Keir-A continues…
